Never Ever Be Condescending To Those On Entitlement Programs By Rick London

Am not sure why so many of the ignorant of the Top 1% (and the giant parade of 1% wannabes) gloat about “this entitlement society being so sorry”.  Poverty, the need for food stamps, disability assistance, social security and/or government assistance, is very rarely (if ever) the fault of those suffering in poverty.  Nine times out of ten, the person receiving assistance needs it to live due to physical or mental/emotional and in many cases misdiagnosed or  not-yet-diagnosed illness, or a multitude of other legitimate reasons.  Most have never gotten proper medical care. Some have gotten state care, which is often “the basics” at best.  Under The Affordable Health Care Act, they will get dignity and health, something that is deserved by every single American.  A right?  You bet it’s a right.  So is food. No child should go to bed hungry…ever.   Is the system ever abused? Of course it is.  But the percentage is so low, it does not warrant shutting off or cutting back such programs.

Ask any economist/scholar.  An entitlement society is a natural reaction to bad business, bad business management, bad hiring/firing, cash-hoarding businesses/entrepreneurs – resulting in money staying stagnant in one region, and a million other bad business decisions.  People don’t just wake up one day and say “I’m going to be poor and ‘get stuff’ from the government”.  More often than not, government assistance is a very last resort, and even then, the recipient has exhausted his/her ideas of how to make their lives work, when everything is gone; and promises of help or hope never arrived.

They more often wake up poor because, generally, they have horrendous business leaders in their cities, and the government was forced to come in and helped.  When I say horrendous that can mean anything from insensitive to self-absorbed to lack-of-vision to not understanding that an entire community is an ecosystem, and what happens in the poorest of neighborhoods affects what happens in the wealthiest and vice versa.

When we think entitlements we often think of welfare, food stamps etc.  And of course much entitlements go to these programs, and these programs are not bad.  A lot of families (including children and babies) do not go to bed hungry because of them.

Around 1930, colleges were going to make it affordable for WW1 Veterans who became homeless but under GOP Herbert Hoover’s administration to go to school.  The government promised a 10K bonus to every returning soldier. Not one got a penny.

Local businesses promised to help, but didn’t.  They were going broke too, under the government of Hoover who was privatizing everything just as had run his huge business conglomerate similar to Bain Capital which Mitt Romney had run.  Colleges said they would lower their prices but couldn’t  because business leaders failed them (and they ended up living in villages of cardboard boxes and tree bark called “Hoovervilles” where most of them died before FDR was elected and founded the GI Bill enabling them to go to college).

Many in America were against the GI Bill.  They called it “communism”.  Do you think of it that way too? I don’t. At ALL. I’m proud of to live in a country that has such a decent program for honorable men and women who served our country.  Many of them need food stamps and I salute them.  It is their right to eat too.  Anyone who would take that away from them should have to walk a mile in their boots in a war zone.  They might change their minds.

So if you are against entitlements, you better add the GI Bill to your list of “Evil Socialist Programs” because it is a socialist program.  Most capitalistic societies like ours have such bills. Australia, UK, Canada, Israel and other of or top allies.  We call them “socialism” in their countries…we call it “The GI Bill in ours”.  It’s socialism, and some socialism is very good.  No country, including ours is 100% capitalistic in which the government has little or no duties.  Hoover tried that and it drove us into the Great Depression within a year of his election.

In other words you really do think like Mitt and his 47% (even if you don’t think you) because without the government and its entitlements, all our returning soldiers would be living in boxes and never step foot on a college campus.

The majority of our military’s pay is so low they have to get food stamps to live; even app. 7% of military officers.   And they are giving their all to keep us safe.  You, GOP should be a shame. I hope you’re thinking this through long and hard; that is, your alleged hate of those who “feel entitled”.  Because most of them are.

Without The Affordable Health Care Act millions of children would be turned away from treatment due to preconditions.  Many of their parents are disabled or ill. Many are homeless.  There are a million reasons people are in situations they are in (due to fate), and they aren’t “evil” nor is it a “punishment from God”.

In addition, keeping the poor down, or not giving them a hand up, creates a vicious cycle that ends up costing the wealthy much more than helping educate them or create jobs for the poor.  We are all creatures of habit.

Though people of all stations in life may get into trouble with the law, drugs, alcohol etc., when the poor do, it often ends up more costly. Why?  The poor are more likely to go to jail, due to lack of proper legal counsel than a person of means who can afford a nice rehab and then back to work or training for a new job. And who pays? You do….I do…or our taxes do.

And the cost of housing and feeding a prisoner is about 30 times more costly than a college student.  But since you are so into punishment for “just being poor”, it must be worth it to you.  You need to look within.  That is not the way a civilized advanced society acts.  In fact the very opposite.

So isn’t it in our best interest to try to help them become educated?  To make sure they have proper health care?  And if they can’t work, get enough government assistance to live with dignity? If you don’t think so, it might be time to look within, and know there are people much wealthier than you, who think the same thing about you…and me.  And what do you think of those people’s narrow minds?  Pretty dumb people, aren’t they?  If only they knew how to think things through.

No matter how one may feel about this past Presidential Election, or the wealthy, or the poor, or entitlements, one does not have to have a considerably high IQ to know that the GOP politicos and news talking heads who continue to carry the “It was the way the message was delivered” torch are only fools fooling themselves.  It was the message.  Many of them are finding that out.

It’s easy to blame Mitt Romney, but I don’t think of any other person who could have delivered their message more effectively. It was a rancid horrendous message that is being used in Iran and it appears now Egypt and several other Middle Eastern countries.  It is called a theocracy.

A theocracy will not work in America.  Do you think by my thinking or saying that that I am anti-religion or anti-Christianity? Anything but. In fact so pro-religion and Christianity (and any other spiritual path one might choose that works for him/her) that I write this blog.  I know that on its own, in a community, helping a community, doing what it does best, a church, synagogue or mosque can be a Godsend to many. It enhances any community.

A lot of people who are not affiliated with a religious community also contribute greatly to our society. When religion becomes legislated it becomes the opposite of what it was meant to be.  For that reason, our founding fathers escaped Merry Old England by the skin of their teeth.  Did they hate Christianity?  No. They simply saw what became of it when it (or any religion) decides to run the government.  It becomes very nasty.

I wouldn’t want my religion running government, nor would I even think of inflicting that on anyone.  With all its faults, and it has it’s share, it doesn’t need to be muddled with a business as dirty as politics just to give it more power.   Neither does yours.  Really.   Yours is beautiful just as it is.  Don’t try to ruin it like the Tea Party came very close to doing; and…may still try again.

Stop Blaming Obama by Rick London

I remember when I was young and immature (like Donald Trump), and used to blame one man for every single slump in my business. That man was the President.

I felt, “Why is business down? I know why.  Dam President. We need to vote him out, and get one who understands.

It never occurred to me that I had shortcomings.  That at least 90% of my business stats had to do with my own business practices, not what one man’s actions were in Washington, D.C.

Under the Clinton administration, I launched the business I have now which is cartoons and quote licensed gifts. It grew rapidly.

It grew some more during the GW Bush administration; in fact at times faster than under the Clinton administration, and I didn’t even vote for GW Bush, but I give credit where credit is due.

Neither Bush nor Clinton had very much to do with it, though with a balanced budget (Clinton) I admit made it easier to start such a business with zero backing.

Under Obama, it probably grew its largest, but also had some of its slowest days; neither of which had anything to do with President Obama.

My Same Office (During GW Bush & Obama) Administrations. Still Operating

It all had to do with me. How was I promoting it?  Was I following up on sales?  Was I being creative and persistent with my products?  Was I utilizing social media properly.

Absolutely none of that had to do with Obama.

I sincerely get a huge chuckle when I see broke ex-millionaires like Donald Trump blame Obama for every business problem that happens to him. For instance, all those clothiers are having

(Above) My office: Under

GW Bush & Barack Obama.

Nothing has changed, and

business is good.

their merchandise made in China.

“Who can compete”?, he asked David Letterman.  Letterman turned his batch of ties over to find they were “Made In China”.  Busted.

Get real people.  Obama is doing fine on the economy.   Romney has no plan.  Besides what either of them do has VERY little; maybe .000034 of what happens to your business, compared with what you do to it.

Also keep in mind we live in a world with rapid changes. Check your merchandise or service regularly.

As an adult I had to switch careers at least 6 times and go back to school at age 47. Under Obama? No under GW Bush.   The training I’d had became obsolete.

It was not Bush’s fault and he gave me a chance to re-educate myself.

Start coming clean. We all have shortcomings and Presidents have little if anything to do with them.

Neither do our parents (anymore) if we are adults.  We’ve had plenty of time to correct their mistakes.

If you don’t care for President Obama for the reasons we know you don’t, fine. Admit it.  We know its not because he’s not doing a very good job in spite of 4 years of GOP obstruction (they admit

it), he’s not a socialist, a secret Kenyan Muslim, he’s a Christian who loves America and his family and America.

If you don’t like him,  most of us really know why (See: John Sununu on YouTube for further information).   I respect him for revealing his “dog whistles”. I abhor those who still use the useless

nonproductive ridiculous “hide my racism” talking points.

Now quit blaming Obama and get to work.  That’s what I’m doing.  And I’m making money…just like I did under the GW Bush administration, when America was falling into a depression.  But

here’s the rub. I work hard.  You can do.  Are you telling me I’m wrong? If I am, you may be in the wrong business.  It may be an unnecessary service. It happens a lot these days.  It happened to me as I said.  If you are in the right business, and you are working hard, I mean truly hard, you’re making money. No excuses. Obama has about as much to do with your income as the unemployed in Queens have to do with making Donald Trump’s ties.

The harder the work, the lesser you blame the President, any President, or anyone else for your shortcomings.

How Today’s GOP Insured That This Independent Would Probably Never Vote GOP Again

As a couple who was neutral for our 1st 2-3 years on facebook; didn’t even mention politics once, we were allowed to observe. My wife Lee Hiller-London were VERY busy with our work, and didn’t have time to follow politics.  What little I could see, I had pretty much made up my mind I was for Huntsmann.  Lee was building her new brand, and I was expanding my then 13 year old cartoon brand and compiling several books.   Politics was one of the last things on our mind.  We live in a small mountain town where, though people vote, most of them (and us) get along in spite of poltical differences. After all, we’re all Americans with the same goals.

Our town Hot Springs, Ar has an education demographic a bit higher than the national norm.  We are all keenly aware that political differences are a moot point; that if one must judge another, it should be on character, or one is going to be very disappointed since not all Republicans and not all Democrats are pristine citizens.  But more importantly, character remains head and heels above political or religious dogma.  It’s nice to live in a community with that kind of progressive mindset.  Sometimes it feels like being “a fly on the wall” of some of our Founding Father’s early meetings.

I didn’t dislike Obama but it appeared “nothing was getting done”. (I had not had time to study the GOP Congressional Armada against him). Once I learned the real story from the library of congress, National Archives etc (and not slanted news networks), I was livid.

By then I was being bullied by this strange theological cult pretending to be the GOP and demanding I love Sarah Palin, then Herman Cain (and their hero/American Patriots) seemed to change with the weather.  I didn’t know who they were, I just knew I was not going to vote for whomever they wanted.  Their bullying was like high school on steroids.

They demanded lockstep belief, behavior etc and “to vote like them” or be a “socialist Muslim traitor to America” (their words, not mine).  They turned out to be known as “The Tea Party”. So my 1st taste of what the GOP had become reminded me of someone had gotten the keys to the institution and let them all out.  They have not changed, but I surely have.  Finally I decided to listen a little closer to what they were saying.  While they were still trying to figure out who/what I was (why was that so important?), I was watching them watching me.

They had already concluded I was an Obama supporter when, ironically I was fully behind Huntsmann.  But I dare not tell him; as I felt even that far back that Huntsmann was way too sane for a party with that much hate/judgement etc; and I may have to choose another candidate.  And given the GOP’s choices, it was probably going to be Obama.  And the more they bullied me, the closer I got to liking Obama. And finally I was on his side by default.  It was them trying to “scare me into not voting Obama”, that I knew instinctively he must be the right one, and they knew of something very nasty going on (I would later discover the GOP block of all jobs bills, veterans job bill etc etc etc).  Since I’d not watched much news as it would interfere with school and work, I was vulnerable game for any political party (or theological cult in their case).  I decided to go along with a real political party.  In the famous words of Ronald Reagan, I didn’t abandon them, they abandoned me”.  And big time.

Though I still think Huntsman would have made a great President in the same vein as Teddy Roosevelt or IKE (I tend to lean more fiscally conservative than most), I also got the real scoop on Romney/Ryan vs Obama.

Obama makes Romney/Ryan look like Enron when it comes to economic fiscal responsibility. Yes, my reason for voting for Obama is not because Romney is too conservative….it is because Obama really IS conservative…but a real one. A centrist conservative very much like Teddy Roosevelt or IKE.  What is Romney? It, of course,  depends on what day it is, and in which state he is making a speech. Frankly I prefer the “Casual Friday Moderate Mitt”; but that only lasts 12 hours.

Voting Pro-Life? Are You Sure? Meet Misoprostol And The New Cheap Abortion Pill Entrepreneurs You’re Financing.

The more headway Romney and Ryan make, the closer we see Misoprostol becoming a household word.  Those of us who spend time on Twitter have seen it coming down the stream ever since Romney admitted to Mike Huckabee of his commitment to The Personhood Bill.

The Mexican pharmacist awakens about 6am and drives to his wood-frame pharmacy about ½ mile down a narrow street full of stray dogs and cats.  He sees the Pfizer truck awaiting him so he rushes to the door to let the driver in.

Jose Hernandez was educated at the pharmacy school in Mexico City and moved back to his home of San Antonio (not Tx) but a small town outside of Tijuana that boasts a beautiful Pacific Island beachfront.  Many Americans own property on the beach due to it’s quiet scenic ocean view and low prices (for that kind of property).  It’s only a 2.5 hour drive from San Diego.

Though Jose knows the bulk of Cytotec (also known by its generic name Misoprostol) will be his biggest seller, he also knows the majority of it will not be walk-in business, but Americans in states with few abortion clinics who cannot afford to travel to one.  So they order Misoprostol made for ulcers which also often cause an abortion to occur.  But not always.  And when it does not, which is 3% of the time, it puts the baby at a much higher risk of birth defects.

But of course women in need of an abortion don’t care.  Their state government has made it impossible for them to have a safe abortion, so they will obviously use what is now being called “The Chemical Coathanger”.

In Uraguay where abortions are illegal, unethical doctors have been meeting with women for years in clandestine places to sell them Misoprostol at ridiculously inflated prices.  Several women have died this year from the drug.  Though it is safer than the old back-alley coathanger, it is only barely safer.

Misoprostol can also easily be purchased in America from any Canadian pharmacy at cheap prices.  A big problem is that, many times these drugs, if ordered from out of the U.S. will be held up for weeks and even months at customs.  That means a woman who was seeking an early-term abortion will now have to have a mid-to-late term one.

It is also cheap and easily ordered from most Asian countries and India and American women are already ordering and stocking up in schocking numbers (according to their Twitter tweet streams)

Though misoprostol can be bought over the counter in Mexico, a prescription is required in the U.S. and it most likely will not be outlawed even if abortion is. Why?  Because it is an ulcer drug already approved by the FDA for ulcers.

The bulk of Jose’s sales are made in the U.S.  It appears women are stockpiling just in case the Romney/Ryan ticket gets elected.   His sales have increased about 5000% in the past year.  He outsources the dropshipping of the med so as not to take away from his other pharmaceutical duties.

The “talk of twitter” says these “Internet Abortion Drug Entrepreneurs” have been “sitting in wait” for years, for a ticket like Romney/Ryan who might indeed select the right Supreme Court Judges to attempt to overturn RVWade.  They had banked on Reagan but it didn’t happen.  Now these weasels have true hope.  They will, no doubt, be among the wealthiest E-Entrepreneurs in the world, as it is common sense that this medicine will be the most purchased over the net from other countries.

And of course that means the U.S. Government will do the predictable….Wage a “War On Internet Abortion Drug Entrepreneurs” inciting others to “get in on a piece of the pie” and hidden scripts will enter the country left and right.  Many women, of course will not have to go to the trouble to order the drug, though an article in a Texas Newspaper says many women in Texas already are crossing the border to get the med to stockpile it.

Many American doctors will simply prescribe it for ulcers, and an abortion will occur; or if not, most likely a baby with dramatic birth defects, and the drug (taken in amounts for abortion) can greatly compromise the woman’s immune system according to many studies and examples.

Jose’s business is not “an isolated case”.  Abortion Entrepreneurs have been “laying in wait” since the days of Reagan….hoping he would nominate enough of the far right to the Supreme Court to overturn RVWade and let the floodgates loose, and, of course bring them more wealth than anyone could ever imagine.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet would be “names of the past” compared to the top 10 of these clowns selling ulcer meds over the net…and frankly even to the friendly small town doctor who suddenly finds he/she has an incredible amount of women suffering from “ulcers”.

During the days of RVWade, there were no Internet abortions, only back alley brutal killers.  Those days will be in the past for the most part.   Most women will be able to afford the risky ulcer drug, and will take the risk of birth defects in case the med does not work.  Back then, it was cut and dry; one was either for abortion or against it.

Today, there are many shades of gray.  There is partial birth abortion which is outlawed except in very rare cases in which it will kill the mother, or when the baby is found already dead.  In fact in either case most doctors tend to teminate the pregnancy in order to save the mother’s life and it does not fall under the auspices of “laws against partial birth abortion”.

There is still debate over “when life begins”, but that will no longer even be a debate if safe abortion is outlawed, as the majority of  women will not be going for medical help but ordering the drug directly from foreign pharmacies, or getting an “online consultation” from an unscrupulous m.d. in America who will ask questions for five minutes and Fed Ex the drug to her.

If/When the feds close the MD down, 10,000 others will crop up.  The war on abortion entrepreneurs will not be one of course.  A federal prosecuting attorney with whom I grew up once told me, “Whenever there is a war on anything (other than war/battles) it is not only not won, but makes it worse”. I am in complete agreement with him on that topic, though he and I have debated on many other topics on which we don’t agree.   He is a smart man, nevertheless.

So how do we create an environment for less abortions?  Everything that the GOP is against.  More education, contraceptive and family planning.  I’m still trying to figure out how taking away contraception will result in less abortion.  It’s sort of like less soap will cause more cleanliness.

With the abortion entrepreneur laying in wait (in every country in the world, I’m told), it’s really time to re-think voting on a “pro-life” ticket, because unlike the days of RVWade, it is suddenly the “ticket of death and destruction”.

They didn’t mean to be. Their hearts were in the right place, but anyone who understands the nature of the Internet (and I went back to school to study IT) knows every major niche will be filled by very eager entrepreneurs; and abortion is no exception.   Who would have ever thought pro-choice tickets would be the ticket of life?  Life is full of irony. (PS: Please don’t kill  the messenger). Simply google “Abortion Ulcer Drug” and take a look at all the activity already happening, and November is not yet  even here.

I believe the extremely important thing to remember here is that one can be pro-life and not vote a pro-life ticket (simply because of the millions of more, and dangerous abortions it is going to cause).  In fact, if one thinks this through, the only TRUE pro-life persons will vote the pro-choice ticket.  How can they not?  They are not in this for power or “to have their dogmatic way”.  They are truly in it for less and safer abortions.  Most will argue with me now.  But as more of this information emerges, and Misoprostol becomes a household word in America; which of course it will under a Romney/Ryan administration, pro-life voters and pro-choice voters will say, “Rick really wasn’t misleading us”.  This is not only really happening, it is now so far out of control it can never be fixed.”   Food for thought.

Politics & Psychiatry. When To Debate When To Get Therapy by Rick London

If you have been in a political debate or have seen something political either on facebook (or in real life) of which you disagree, and you think less of that person for posting or saying it, I suggest long-term therapy (and this time I’m not being funny).

All of us are much more than our petty political viewpoints….that is just a very tiny part of us. Never ever just become your political point of view, because once you do, you’ve lost yourself in a horrid way. Human beings are of the greatest value. A sign of maturity is differing in POV, yet still thinking highly of the other person as one of God’s children. It doesn’t matter if you are Democrat or Republican. It’s the same disease when we close our minds to opposing points of view. We don’t have to like their point of view.  We don’t even have to come close to agreeing.
It is legal to entertain a new idea, without accepting it.

Think about how you were from birth to age 5 or so. Politics was not even in the picture.  All the possibilities of this great big mysterious world were abound.  If you grew up, and you left all that to become “your political idealism”, think how very, very sad that is. I’m not saying it is not okay to have a political view; it is in fact healthy.  But just keep it in perspective.  Know that when you post it on facebook or twitter, it truly is for your own entertainment.

It is not going to change anyone’s mind; in fact studies show, it usually has the opposite effect (but admittedly it can be fun, as long as one does not become obsessed with it).

Like religion and spirituality, it should be “walked and lived” but when it becomes preached or coerced, it tends to lose its value (or people tend to take us a bit less seriously).

To occasionally watch network news stations with which you disagree shows true maturity and a need/want to open the mind and learn more. To not do so is to stagnate the mind in a most pitiful way. And I don’t say that out of spite or with glee. I learned that from interviews with nearly 50 nursing home residents in 1996-1997  with my question, “What would you have done differently in your life…if anything?” The answers were solid gold and most were happy to answer.

Their answers, were of such value I could never repay even if I tried three lifetimes.  Most would not have wasted time in silly petty political or social issue disagreement.  They simply

would have walked their own walk; leaving others alone to walk there’s; and not only tolerating an opposite walk, but applauding it.  Now that’s wisdom.

Several said they would have not been coerced or try to coerce others into believing or thinking as they did (in other words walk the walk of “living and let live”) and so much more; enough to loosen the cobwebs to launch LTCartoons.com on March 19, 1997. I can never repay the residents of Hattiesburg Nursing Home, most of them 70+ who taught me life, real life, before it was too late.

Though my reason for visiting the nursing home, at first, was to visit my beloved grandmother Ruth “Dear” London.  Many of the residents were quite lucid and great conversationalists.  I thought I might volunteer and offer some of my time, and be a good listener.

Just imagine my surprise when they ended up giving me more than I could have ever given them.

Don’t Tell Me About That….. Poem by Rick London c2012

I don’t want to talk about straights and gays,

I have little interest in Chic-Fil-A,

Don’t bombard me with your political agenda,

I might say something that might offend ya.

Don’t tell me the Chinese bought the Canadian pipeline,

Last I heard Conoco who owns it was doing quite fine.

Of the Mideast don’t give me no lip,

Your opinions are pointless on Hamas’ terrorist Gaza Strip.

Yeah, I’d like to know why Romney didn’t pay taxes,

And made a bundle on the poor’s backs-es.

Don’t tell me about Anne Romney’s Horse dressage,

Or how Al Gore gives tips for message.

Blaming economic woes on GW Bush is a little bit rotten,

But let’s not forget Obama signed off on Bin Laden,

Don’t share what you’ve charged that you can’t be affordin’,

Or even your thoughts on Gitmo or waterboarding.

I want to talk about simple things,

Like tapioca, vegan meals, and 60s music cell phone rings.

I’m sick of Romney and his foreign policy gaffes,

But I’m leaving necks that stick out, to gossips and giraffes.

Talking about simple things is what makes me happy,

Like being in love, puppies and things you find sappy.

Don’t try to lure me into your pro-life or pro-choice endless debates,

And the same old song that you regurgitate.

Tell me about how you’ve learned how to think,

Beyond your upbringing, outside the rancid box that stinks.

Show me that you’ve come to terms of being infected,

From well-meaning friends, parents and teachers who were quite misdirected.

You’ll never know from whence I speak,

If you’ve chosen not to listen but only a sermon do you speak.

But one day, (you never know) you may come around,

If we can just get you out of that incestuous town.

Bain (bain)

Can Mitt run the land of the free?
We’re learning he’s no Honest Abe,

And why you bullied in high school on your hair-cutting spree,
There to inflict all your pain,

Unfriending, Social Media, POTUS & Happiness by Rick London

One need not be Kreskin or Jean Dixon these days to figure out what is on someone’s mind.  (For those post boomers they were popular psychics in our younger days).

All one need to do today is take a glance at their social media postings, read their emails, or hang up from talking to them (on one of those rare occasions we use our cell phones rather than email).  You see, (again this is for the youngn’s), we baby boomers have had our share of drama.

Drama requires talking in person or on the phone so we much prefer email or social media.  Unfriending someone no longer requires drama, creating an army of like-minded friends (aka bullying) to defend one’s decision to terminate a friendship and if they try to rekindle it, the army of friends knocks them back down (double-bullying). I always wondered why folks can’t just unfriend quietly in social media and simply move on.  Nobody else really cares who we like or dislike.

Now, with the click of a mouse, we simply unfriend them or even more dramatically block them.  Yowsah. Click click click.  Feel the power, Luke.  (For those of you post-boomers who don’t know who Luke is, well……never mind.)

So these days, especially this close to November, friends are often made or broken based on which glorified policy wonk aka POTUS aka President gets to live at 1600 Pa. Avenue for the next 4 years (and possibly longer).

Many expect the rest of us to tow their party line.  Let me get this straight with everyone up front.  I do vote, but I register as an Independent. I choose the candidate, not the party.  Parties ALWAYS let you down, candidates do about 50% of the time.

Politicians are so far from being my role-models they don’t even show up on the radar screen. And anyone who makes or breaks a relationship based on which politician I think is best for the job, may be a friend, but is a friend in deep need of psychiatric care (and I’m not making a joke here).

My friends are based on character. They are not “armchair powermongers” who enjoy the “divide and conquer” that their favorite trained politician has shown them.  I like/and love people based on many other factors…..how they feel about themselves and others, their treatment of animals and the planet, their generosity (and this need not be financial but in sharing their personality/gifts etc., their sense of humor/or their appreciation of humor, and so many other factors).  Their political preference is so far down the stream, I don’t really even care.

Even in today’s (somewhat dysfunctional)…ok very dysfunctional world, there are many reasons to be happy and/or grateful.  Some are so basic we almost miss them.  We awaken yet another day.  That means we still have a reason to be here on the planet.  It may not have been revealed (to us yet) but it is there, and usually others discover it before we do.

Sometimes we have our health. I will admit, my health is not optimal but it is well above what it should be. In fact, given medical science, I should have died numerous times.  At first, that made me bitter.  Later I learned it was “what it took” for me to truly look within, and I became a vegan and started hiking the mountains with my beloved wife Lee Hiller-London.

Not everyone has to become a vegan and hike mountains with the one they love to be happy.  The trick is simply to learn from one’s errors, and attempt to correct them. Do a little better than yesterday.            If you ate a Big Mac yesterday, don’t eat one today. If you didn’t exercise yesterday, walk a block today.  I changed my lifestyle very gradually…I didn’t stop eating milk, fish, meat, eggs, etc all in one day and begin leaping buildings like Superman.  It took almost two years, a lot of reading, a lot of patience from Lee who was already well on her way to a healthier lifestyle, and the willingness to give it a try. I didn’t know if it would work. I only knew that the way I had been living didn’t work. And a little over a year past those changes, I am just beginning to learn about life and treasure it as it should be treasured.  I am but a newbie and can tell I will be for a very long time.

My happiness (or lack thereof) was the same under the administrations of JFK, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, both Bush’s, Clinton and Obama.  Presidents had absolutely nothing to do with my mood (though it was so convenient and easy to project any of my own problems using their own shortcomings; and each has had many, but each have done much good as well).  America, with all its issues has continued to exist and thrive throughout many diverse administrations.  I believe that has much more to do with the people of America, their faith in America, and their reverence to the U.S. Constitution; not any one person living at a nice address on Pa. Ave.

So today, simply make the decision to be happy.  Do one little thing that is better for you than you did the day before.  Journal it.  The next day do another.  You may slide backward some days. I know I do.  But keep trying.  Don’t blame me. Don’t blame an enemy. Don’t blame the President or a candidate you don’t like.  All that will simply delay your road to happiness. Joy is within you. Not 2000+ miles away in Washington, D.C.  I believe I am on the right path to be happy. I can’t guarantee it, but it feels right to me.  One thing I know for sure, though (based on experience).

That is, spending one’s time on social media to teach them what to think, feel, believe, how to vote, etc etc etc. is a sure way to emptiness and unhappiness, and I’d bet the farm on that.
